Hematite has been used for thousands of years in various forms. Its geological designation is iron oxide. One of the most interesting features is its natural crystalline structure in raw form. It also is found as grains in sediment and as occlusions in many other gemstones, most notably jasper. Egyptian artifacts and jewelry often featured hematite in amulets and talismans. Natural hematite has a reddish tint in powdered or granulated form. For that reason the Greek name for it is "haima" or blood. Though hematite is not mentioned in the Bible, it was highly valued among Greeks for its healing properties and the popular belief among Romans that whoever wore the stone would be protected from physical harm.
